Welcome to Sand Lake, located in the middle of the Almaguin Highlands, less than 10 kilometers from the town of Kearney and 30 kilometers from the larger Burk’s Falls. The lake is ironically named, as a large portion of the shore is rocky not sandy. The rocky nature of the shoreline can be attributed to runoff water erosion. There is good news though, a good portion of the shallow waters around the shore remain sandy, as the name of the lake suggests.
If you are lucky enough to find one of the naturally sandy bottom spots that make swimming a delight, stake your claim quickly. Kick back and spread out on the sand and soak up some rays. You might find these prime parts of the lake a little busier, especially for other swimmers.
If fishing is your thing, you will find several species of fish reside in the waters. Lake trout, lake whitefish, brook trout, northern pike, rainbow trout, burbot, smallmouth bass, and largemouth bass are the most common fish to call Sand Lake home. So why not spend the afternoon seeing what’s biting. For your convenience, boaters will find a public boat launch on Boat Ramp Road, off Highway 518.
For water sports enthusiasts, Sand Lake is ideal for water skiing, tubing, and wakeboarding. Or, if calmer activities appeal to you, feel free to enjoy the clear blue waters while you paddle your canoe or kayak around Blueberry Island, near the northern shore of the lake, or take a sail by Emerald Island, in the west bay. Both provide spectacular views of the area and are also great for exploring.
After a relaxing day on the water, take a trip into nearby Katrine, where you’ll find the Almaguin Highlands Golf & Country Club, one of the few public courses in the area. It is a fully licensed 9 hole course on the Magnetawan River. Or stay at the lake and have a quiet dinner and drinks out on the patio of the Red Canoe Restaurant at the Edgewater Park Lodge on the north side of the lake.
This is the perfect time of year to ask yourself why not consider Sand Lake a great choice for your next home away from home.
